How to Verify a Fiber Optic Cable Factory Before Sending an RFQ
A practical supplier-verification workflow covering legal identity, production evidence, certification scope, test records, traceability and shipment controls before buyers request a firm quotation.

Verification should reduce a specific purchasing risk
A factory check is useful only when it answers questions that affect the order: who will sign the contract, where the cable will be produced, whether the proposed construction can be made on the available line, how the finished drums will be tested and how nonconforming material will be controlled. Begin with the cable family, route, quantity and delivery requirement. Then ask for evidence against those risks. A long corporate presentation is less valuable than a short chain connecting the legal supplier, approved drawing, production process, test record and drum list.
Match the legal company, address and payment beneficiary
Ask for the current business-registration details, registered address, operating address and the name that will appear on the quotation, contract, invoice and bank account. Differences can be legitimate, but they should be explained before payment. Confirm that the person communicating with you is authorized to quote for the named company. For a remote review, request a live call that starts at the exterior sign or reception and moves to the production and test areas without cuts that hide location changes.
Follow one cable through the actual production route
Generic workshop photographs do not prove that a supplier controls the process required for your cable. Ask the supplier to explain the sequence for the quoted construction: fibre colouring, loose-tube extrusion where applicable, stranding or central-tube assembly, armour or strength-member application, sheath extrusion, metre marking, optical inspection and drum packing. Equipment does not need to be running for your order during an initial audit, but the explanation, approved drawing and visible process should agree. For specialized products, confirm whether any step is subcontracted and how that supplier is controlled.
Read certificates for scope, issuer and validity
ISO 9001 is a quality-management-system standard; it does not certify that every cable model meets every optical or mechanical requirement. Check the certified legal entity, site address, stated scope, certificate number, issuing certification body and validity. CE marking and RoHS declarations are also context dependent. Ask which legal requirement applies to the quoted product and market, and request the supporting declaration or test basis. Do not accept a logo on a brochure as proof, and do not assume one certificate covers another company, factory address or product family.
Approve the construction before comparing prices
Require a controlled datasheet or drawing that identifies fibre type and count, tube arrangement, water blocking, strength members, armour or moisture barrier, sheath material, nominal diameter and weight, applicable mechanical values, drum length and marking. Compare offers line by line against the same requirement. Similar model codes can describe different bills of materials, and a lower price may reflect a different construction rather than better purchasing. Record the approved revision so production, inspection and any later change are measured against one document.
Ask for traceable optical and mechanical evidence
For routine release, agree what will be recorded for each drum or production length: fibre continuity, test wavelengths, attenuation result, length, fibre or tube identifier, drum number, equipment identity and test date. OTDR traces can document length and events when specified, but an image of one screen is not a complete batch record. Separate routine order tests from design-qualification tests such as tensile, crush, impact, bending, temperature cycling or water penetration. The purchase specification should state which reports, sampling and acceptance limits apply.
Connect packing and shipment proof to the accepted drums
Before release, reconcile drum numbers, cable model, fibre count, start and end metre marks, declared length, gross weight and packing-list line. Ask for readable label photographs, cable-end sealing, overall drum condition and loading photographs when required. If accessories are shipped with cable, use a controlled bill of materials and carton numbers. Evidence should show that accepted production lengths became the loaded shipment; unrelated warehouse photographs do not close that traceability gap.
Send an RFQ package that can be audited
Include the route and installation method, fibre type and count, required construction or performance, quantities, drum schedule, marking, destination, standards, inspection plan and required evidence. State whether samples, a live video review, third-party factory audit or witnessed pre-shipment inspection is required. Ask suppliers to list every deviation rather than silently quoting an alternative.
